Are you anaemic? Know the types, causes, symptoms and remedies

When you do not have enough healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin to carry oxygen to the tissues in your body, you are likely dealing with anemia.

Red blood cells, also known as erythrocytes, are responsible for carrying oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body’s tissues and organs. They are shaped like biconcave discs and contain a protein called hemoglobin, which binds to oxygen and helps transport it.

Anaemia is a condition characterized by a deficiency of healthy red blood cells. There are different types of anemia and they are linked with various diseases. These are iron deficiencies, vitamin deficiencies, anemia linked to bone marrow diseases, and sickle cell anemia amongst others.

Iron deficiency is the most common type of anemia. When you have too little iron in your body, you tend to be anemic. Pregnant women also fall into this category when they don’t take iron supplements. Women who lose a lot of blood during their menstrual cycle too also face the risk of anemia.

Diseases such as Leukemia can also deprive the bone marrow of producing enough Red blood cells.

Sickle cell anemia is an inherited group of disorders that cause the breakdown of red blood cells. The red blood cells form into a sickle shape and then die early, leaving a shortage of healthy red blood cells.

According to healthline.com, both the acute and chronic forms of anemia can lead to shortness of breath because there are not enough red blood cells to transport oxygen throughout the body.

Common symptoms of depleted Red Blood Cells include but are not limited to:
– weakness
– Shortness of breath
– Rapid heartbeat
– Defocus
– Numbness or tingling feeling in the hands or feet
– Pale skin
– Fatigue
– Feeling faint

Natural remedies like a healthy diet, exercise, and herbal supplements can help support the production and function of Red blood cells. For example, foods rich in iron such as fish, poultry, dark green leafy vegetables, peas, lentils, beans, fruits, and other iron-fortified cereals and breads, vitamin B12, and folic acid can help boost the production of red blood cells. Additionally, Rida herbal Bitters have been consistently used by people to support immune function.
